Insurance serves as necessary safety net

In daily life, it is true that we rarely have “safety nets,” but fortunately, they are not often necessary. However, most people do have a certain sort of invisible “safety net” in the form of insurance, whether it is health insurance, car insurance, life insurance, or some other type of policy.

For most folks in business in the working world, it is important to secure such a “safety net,” especially if the work you do involves members of the public. This kind of insurance policy typically is known as liability insurance. Whether the professional is a doctor, a carpet cleaner, a makeup artist or a massage therapist, liability insurance is a business basic.

That’s because no one can control for all circumstances, and certainly no one can control or predict the actions of every client. Much like car insurance, which is required for all drivers in case of an accident on the road, liability insurance is crucial in case of an accident or other unexpected scenario that might take place in your practice or on your property.

As a massage therapist or body worker, it may be difficult to believe that any one of your clients could ever claim damage or injury due to the hands-on work you perform or due to an accident in your practice or on your property. It is true that such occurrences likely are rare, but insurance in all its forms is there for those rare, but potentially costly, occurrences.

For example, say some of your tools or equipment, such as a massage chair or the stereo in your session room, were stolen. A solid massage therapy liability insurance program will be able to reimburse you for the value of lost or stolen goods, at least up to a certain amount of money.

As another example, imagine moving furniture around in your rented practice space and accidentally damaging the property. Again, a high-quality massage therapy liability insurance policy should pay for the necessary repairs.

The professional liability insurance that comes along with such programs also is critical for massage therapists and body workers, as these touch practitioners work with members of the public day in and day out. Having general liability insurance means having protection against the possibility of a client claiming damage or injury due to incompetence or lack of skill on the part of the hands-on practitioner.

These policies should come with product liability insurance as well. This is much like general liability insurance, except it guards against client claims or damage or injury due to a product used in your practice.

Among the other useful “safety nets” offered by massage therapy liability insurance is the general liability portion of the program. This is your protection against the possibility of an accident taking place on your property, such as a slip on an icy sidewalk or a trip over a loose rug in the hallway.

There are, of course, other benefits to a thorough massage therapy liability insurance policy, but a few of the most important ones have been outlined above. Get yourself a “safety net,” and practice with peace of mind.
